13-year-old Tyler Van Skiver found a booming surprise hidden behind his father's fairly standard request to accompany him on an errand run. The 8th grader attends Boles Junior High in Arlington and relaxes by playing the drums. He was also born with muscular dystrophy, which causes degradation of muscle tissue over time. His parents contacted the Make-A-Wish foundation, the nonprofit that grants wishes for children who are diagnosed with a life-threatening illness. And when Van Skiver and his father Brian walked into Mr. E's in Southlake, there lied the 13-year-old's dream: A drum set, valued at $7,000. "It's amazing. I'm just so happy he got his kit. He jammed with a band and he did awesome," said Angela Boehn, Tyler's mother. The surprise also came with a host of local musicians, including two former members of Pantera who are now part of a band named Arm of the Sun. The group wanted to be a part of the drum delivery as soon as they heard that Tyler's dream was to wrap his hands around a pair of drum sticks in front of a decent set. "We're all about the music," said vocalist Lance Harvill. "We remember what it was like to be kids; we really wanted to be a part of it. It was a lot of fun for us." With a smile plastered wide on his face, Tyler played his heart out and the musicians noticed. After Tyler put the sticks down, his drumming was soon replaced with applause. "He's a great drummer," Harvill said.
